The
Sauerkraut festival is an annual event that happens in Waynesville, Ohio. The
first festival was in 1970. The first festival had an antique car parade and a
spelling bee contest and a competition for largest head of cabbage. Since then,
the festival has evolved from crowds of 4000 people to about 350,000 people in
a weekend. There is just under 500 booths at the festival and each one is
unique in food or craft. There is one booth that has been there since the
beginning. Bailey’s Concessions has been a staple in the Sauerkraut festival.
Bailey and her daughter Pat run the booth together. They make candied apples
and cotton candy and a lot of delicious treats for the festival goers. Bailey’s
husband had a helping hand in creating the Sauerkraut festival. Her booth has
seen the festival grow from a few booths with a few thousand people to hundreds
of booths with 350,000 visitors. The festival has some key items I personally
have to get every year, the first one is Sauerkraut pizza. It is literally
pizza made specifically for the festival and it is so cheesy, and the sauerkraut
is not overpowering. The next thing I always have to get is the cheesecake on a
stick. It is New York style cheesecake dipped in chocolate. The final thing I
have to get every time I go is a German Sundae. It is sliced potatoes, sour
cream, an olive, sauerkraut and cheese. I used to make them when I was in high
school for the National Honors Society. The Sauerkraut festival is a staple for
the village of Waynesville. School is canceled the Monday after the festival,
and the Friday before the schools let out early. Waynesville is known for two
things, antiques and the Sauerkraut festival and they would not have it any
other way.
