When
a person walks into a business in 2019, they are sure to see mostly modern
technology and lots of it. The furniture and technology of the past is barely
seen. That is the opposite at Pickrel Brothers, Inc. This business in Dayton,
Ohio does not have the same feeling as any other business. It is a plumbing
wholesaler that sells to contractors and the public. The first thing that could
be seen when coming in would be wooden tables, plastic signs, and file cabinets
galore. The store opened its doors in 1954. Not much has changed since then.
There are still books everywhere from the early 1980's that describe certain plumbing
parts. There is a total of six desktop computers which are at least ten to
fifteen years old. There are a few laptops that the salesmen use to order new
materials and email customers. The invoices for the entire company are paper,
and they are totaled by hand by a few of the employees there. They are totaled
using electronic calculators, these calculators can print on a tape whatever
the total is. There are also electronic typewriters. That is the only way that invoices
can be typed. The invoices are faxed and occasionally emailed to the customer if
they request it, but mostly they get the last copy of the five-sheet carbon
copy invoice sheet. The invoices are then mailed to customers with accounts and
they send in hard checks to the office. The employees are paid with paper checks,
no direct deposit. The way items are priced for the store is through a large
printed price book. There is 24 sections of the price book and every item that
is sold in the store is there. Everything in the office is done with paper
first then an electronic copy can be made if necessary.
