Searching for a fun way to celebrate music? Look no
further! Every year, nearly 1,400 independently owned record shops in the United
States come together to celebrate our musical heritage. In 2007, Record Store
Day was established at a gathering of independent record store owners and
employees. This day was created to the celebrate the unique culture surrounding
local record shops and their role within our communities. On April 19, 2008 the
first Record Store Day was conceived. Popular festivities include band
performances, cook-outs, artist meet and greets, games, raffle prizes and
giveaways. Furthermore, special vinyl and CD releases in nearly every genre, as
well as various promotional products are made exclusively for the day. In 2008,
a small list of titles was released, which has grown to include artists and
labels both large and small. Today, Record Store Day releases continue to
include a wide variety of music artists, catering to the diverse taste of
record stores and their customers. This annual event is held on one Saturday in
the month of April and every “Black Friday” in November.
Presently, Record Store Day works to fuse the past
with contemporary culture. The vinyl revival has captured the interest of
younger generations, which has made record collecting a fun hobby for all ages.
The twelfth annual Record Store Day will be hosted worldwide on April 13, 2019.
For Daytonians, festivities can be found throughout the city. This year stores
such as Omega Music, Toxic Beauty Records & Poster Gallery, and Skeleton
Dust Records will be participating in the annual celebration. On Saturday,
Omega Music will have the largest selection of Record Store Day titles in the
Miami Valley. Located on 318 E 5th St., their shop will also host one of the busiest Record Store Day events in Dayton. Activities will include a prize wheel, Bingo,
food trucks, free coffee from Wholly Grounds, local band performances, and craft
beer from Warped Wing Brewing Company.
Be sure to go out and celebrate Record Store Day with your city!
